what to expect
god's true word . his imperfect people . grace, renewal, joy
When you walk through our doors, we want you to feel welcomed, loved, and right at home. Stop by our welcome desk for information on current Bible studies, membership, general questions on the layout of the building, where to find the nursery or restrooms, or who to go to with specific needs and requests. Grab a cup of coffee, pop in to any Bible study or Sunday school class, and most importantly, hear God's Word and receive His gifts as you worship with us.
Hearing Assistance Devices are available during worship services upon request – please speak to an usher.
8:00 a.m. Traditional Service
Our 8 a.m. Sunday service is a traditional style worship setting. While historic, it is neither stiff nor stodgy but rather a joyful occasion of thanksgiving for God’s remarkable gifts and promises. Smiles, laughter, and sounds from your children are all very welcome! We sing hymns with an organ or piano (and occasional special musicians) and follow an ancient pattern of activities, shared by believers for hundreds of years. The words we speak throughout the service come directly from the Bible and include things like the confession of our sins, creeds or statements of our beliefs (which we share in common with Christians around the world and throughout history), and even the song of the angels sung over Jesus' heavenly throne in the book of Isaiah. You can follow along in the hymnal or on the screens. And if you have any questions, the people next to you in the pew are great resources - just tap someone on the shoulder, and they'll be happy to tell you anything you need to know.
10:30 a.m. Contemporary Service
Our 10:30 a.m. service is done in a contemporary worship style with a praise band and modern-style Christian music. Like our 8:00 a.m. service, it is built of the same time-honored elements: confession of sins and forgiveness, creeds or statements of belief, prayer, Scripture readings, a sermon, and bi-weekly Communion. You can grab a bulletin on your way in, and follow along on the screens. As always, if you have any questions, the people all around you are happy to help, give you information, or make you comfortable.
Kids in Church
We love kids, and we love to see them in church, receiving God's gifts along with their families. Our weekly children's message is a chance for the kids to interact and learn about being involved. Children's bulletins are provided at the entrance with related activities, and some 'quiet bags' are available if they would like some activities during the service. Cry rooms are available on either side of the sanctuary, and a staffed nursery is available during both services and the education and equipping hour. You are welcome to sign your children in and out as needed.
Dress Code
You will see a wide array of dress at Mountain View Lutheran Church. There are no requirements like the old 'no white after Labor Day' adage. From suits and ties to jeans and t-shirts, we want you here. What one is willing or able to wear has no bearing on the great things God will do for them through the hearing of His Word!
Communion
We believe and teach that the real, literal body and blood of Jesus Christ are mysteriously present in the bread and wine used in communion. Thus, we ask that those communing with us are baptized Christian, with the same understanding of the sacrament. If you don't feel comfortable taking communion, you're welcome to come up and receive a blessing. Just cross your arms over your chest to signify that you would like to receive a blessing. Children in our church take communion once they have received instruction on what it is, means, and does for us. However, it's a joy for families to come to the altar together and all receive God's blessings, be they spoken over the individuals, or imparted through sacrament of communion.
Non-alcoholic wine is available in the center of the tray of individual cups, and gluten free wafers are available upon request. To receive wine from the common cup in the chalice, please lift up one index finger to indicate your preference. The pastors and communion assistants also will bring communion to people in the pews for whom the walk is difficult – we ask that you please sit anywhere on the center aisle.
As a congregation
The face of a congregation continually changes, welcoming newcomers and bidding farewell to those moving on to new places or even in to eternal life with our Savior. Regardless, the church stands firm, sharing an eternally unchanging message in an ever-changing world.
Mountain View's pastor, staff, and congregation strive to love and serve one another and the community at large, right where they are at, today. In 2018, we are seeking a second pastor focusing heavily on discipleship, youth, and Christian education. Our leadership is also in touch with the faithful flock right here in our midst, loving and supporting them through challenges and joys of life this side of Heaven.
As we continue to grow and change, you can rest assured that this is a place where you can be welcomed, given the free grace and mercy of Christ, and hear His true and certain Word. With that in our hearts, minds, and as our foundation, we are free and eager to go wherever He leads.
membership
Membership is not a required part of worshipping at Mountain View Lutheran Church, and we welcome anyone to be here with us whether or not they take that step. However, we would love to have you join us as members of the church. The On Ramp is a group led by Pastor Derek, teaching the basics of our beliefs, answering questions, and encouraging growth in our walk as disciples of Jesus Christ. Those in the On Ramp group will have the option to become members but there is no expectation – it is a safe place to learn, wrestle, question, and struggle. Also, members of another Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod may join us by calling the church office to transfer their membership. Either way, get in touch via phone or email. We would love to have you walk alongside us in our ministry here at Mountain View.
